March for Palestine in Bristol

The Waasila Project is an all-girl Muslim group based in Bristol. The project gives young Muslim girls the chance to make themselves heard in a community where they previously felt disenfranchised and ignored. Despite its specific membership base, Waasila opens up its events and activities to anyone who wants to attend.

In April 2009, Wassila organised a march for Palestine through the streets of Bristol. The march attracted around 1,000 people and generated widespread discussion and debate. Before the march took place, the Waasila girls put questions to their local Government Office. Two weeks later they met with Vernon Coaker MP to celebrate their event, and to discuss issues of segregation in UK society and the war in Iraq.

Two girls publicised the event via a specially-created Facebook group and promotional leaflets and posters. They also took part in school talks to encourage other young people to get involved. Overall the event was a huge success, with support from local mosques and widespread media coverage.
